"We want the theme of the benefit to be about freedom of choice with respect to everyone's rights" says "Papa Kadubi" David Woods, "a high energy party for the community."
David and Martita Maderas Woods and their children have been entertaining us since 1996 with their groups ABAKADUBI and Flamenco Chico. They have performed at the WOW Hall (where they debuted at the 1996 Bob Marley Birthday Celebration), Willamette Valley Folk Festival, Fiesta Latina, Springfield Filbert Festival, Eugene Celebration and the Oregon Country Fair. They were voted the WOW Hall's 'Favorite Local Band' in 2000 and 2001.
The proceeds of this benefit will pay for some of the legal costs necessary to defend Mom and Dad of the ABAKADUBI Family for cannabis related charges. We won't delve into the details here. "The assets with which we should be able to defend ourselves are being held by the court pending the outcome of the case," explains David, "talk to us individually at the show and we can shed more light on it.
"We know that there is an awful lot of need in our community, what with jobs, schools, the homeless, the elderly and health care and we are sensitive to all these issues," he continues, "and we could turn these things around if our community worked together on the important stuff and eliminated the things that divide our community and restrict good, hardworking, honest people from contributing to society.
"This town is full of fabulous people. It's places like this that can change the world into a more beautiful place. That's why we raised our kids here. That's why we want to stay. We hope you will come and join us in raising our voices in solidarity in a positive way for the individual freedom that has been promised to all. We think that the day after Sept. 11th is the most opportune time to come together and make a statement that we not only want our freedom back but we want more."
This is a family event; costumes are encouraged. There will be a silent auction of art, services and crafts donated by the community. Advance tickets are available on a sliding scale for $10.00 or more.
